PETALING JAYA, May 14 — The national synchronised swimming team is vying for a solid showing at next month’s Singapore SEA Games after fishing out ‘bronze’ at the Japan Open last week.
Team captain Katrina Ann Abdul Hadi said the feat in Japan boosted the team’s confidence to go on and win gold, despite the threat of other nations including host Singapore.
“With only nine members, we have been preparing to regain the title we won in Palembang, Indonesia (2011),” said Katrina.
“It will not be an easy task, as other countries have retained the same athletes and groomed them since 2011, while our team is made up of inexperienced swimmers.”
Katrina added the team has been depleted since Zyanne Lee Zhein Huey retired in October.
The team was on song in Palembang, winning five golds in Technical Duet, Free Duet, Technical Team, Free Team and Combination. It ideally requires 10 members to compete, but with time against them, Katrina and Co will have the monumental task of emulating that feat with just nine swimmers.
Besides Katrina, the team consists of Zylane Lee, Tasha Jane Taher Ali, Foong Yan-Nie, Gan Zhen Yu, Gan Hua Wei, Veronica Lee Yiat Lum, Victorya Lee Yiat Xin and Jessie Kwong Zie Kie.
Besides the SEA Games, the team has another big assignment at the World Championships in Kazan, Russia in July.
A good showing there can earn it a spot at next year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
